About the Role
POBA Medical is seeking a hands-on Engineering Technician to support the development, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing of advanced balloon catheters and related interventional medical devices. The Engineering Technician will work closely with engineers to build prototypes, execute development activities, perform testing, support process development, and assist with pilot manufacturing and validation activities.
Responsibilities
- Build and assemble prototype balloon catheters, catheter subassemblies, and related medical devices.
- Set up and operate equipment used in catheter development and manufacturing processes.
- Support engineers in the development and optimization of manufacturing processes.
- Execute engineering experiments, test protocols, and development builds under engineering direction.
- Perform dimensional, mechanical, and functional testing of components and finished devices.
- Collect, organize, and document test and process data.
- Troubleshoot equipment, tooling, assembly processes, and prototype builds.
- Fabricate and modify fixtures, tooling, and prototype components as needed.
- Support pilot manufacturing builds and early production activities.
- Maintain accurate engineering records, build documentation, test records, and other quality system documentation, as required.
- Follow applicable procedures, work instructions, safety requirements, and quality system requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant experience in engineering technology, manufacturing, machining, medical devices, or a related technical field.
- 3+ years of hands-on technical, manufacturing, laboratory, or engineering support experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to work with small components, fixtures, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to follow engineering drawings, procedures, work instructions, and test methods.
- Experience using measurement and test equipment such as calipers, micrometers, force gauges, pressure equipment, or similar instruments.
- Ability to accurately collect and document technical data.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while following direction from engineers and project leads.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in medical device manufacturing, catheter manufacturing, or another regulated industry.
- Experience assembling or developing balloon catheters or minimally invasive medical devices.
- Experience with catheter manufacturing processes such as bonding, tipping, balloon forming, laser processing, folding, lamination, or thermal processing.
- Experience working with thermoplastic materials such as Pebax, Nylon, Polyurethane, PET, PEEK, or FEP.
- Experience performing mechanical or functional testing using tensile testers, pressure systems, dimensional inspection equipment, or similar laboratory equipment.
- Experience supporting engineering studies, DOE activities, or process validations.
- Experience with 3D printing, machining, fixture fabrication, or prototype development.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks or other CAD software.
- Familiarity with FDA and ISO 13485 quality system requirements.
